SMITH
David “Dave” “Davy” Smith is a Memphis bassist, producer, and arranger.
He has worked as a session and touring musician for scores of artists, with credits and associations spanning Memphis soul, blues, rock and roots music.
Dave is originally from Blytheville, Arkansas, and ultimately landed in Memphis, Tennessee. Early musical influences included local bassist Fred Hester, who taught him his first bass riff, James Brown's “Cold Sweat”; legendary American Studios musician Mike Leech, who also played in a band with Dave's older brother; and Paul McCartney.
His work has included artists such as Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, Jonny Lang, Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Cat Power, Leo Kottke, Luther Allison, Al Green, Willie Mitchell, Steve Cropper, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Ike Turner and B.B. King, among others.
